Access anywhere, anytime: Nuclear power, Ice Camp, and Rickover’s enduring standard of excellence
Admiral William Houston
As U.S. Navy submarines surface through Arctic ice during Ice Camp 2026, they demonstrate more than operational proficiency in one of the harshest environments on Earth. They reaffirm a technological truth first proven in August 1958, when the USS Nautilus completed its submerged transit of the North Pole: nuclear power enables access anywhere, anytime.
The Arctic is unforgiving, with vast distances, extreme cold, shifting ice, and no logistical infrastructure. Conventional propulsion is constrained by fuel, air, and endurance. Nuclear propulsion removes those constraints. Only a nuclear-powered submarine can operate anywhere in the world’s oceans, including under the polar ice, undetected and at maximum capability for extended periods. Nuclear power provides sustained high speed and the endurance to reposition across the globe without refueling.
Please select a journal for more information, including how to search each journal's archive, containing thousands of articles both recent and historical.
ANS members have free electronic access to all three of ANS's technical journals. For access to articles, members must sign in to the ANS website before clicking through to the Taylor and Francis Online Platform.
Publication in ANS's journals is free of charge.
Optionally, authors can choose to publish their research open access via Open Select, a feature of ANS's publishing partner Taylor & Francis. Open Select requires payment of an article publishing charge (APC) following peer review and acceptance of a submitted manuscript. The APC rate is $2,990 per submission. Articles published Open Select are made freely available to the public upon publication.
The author name change policy for ANS journals is available online at Taylor and Francis.

ANS strives to not only publish the most thorough and distinguished research in the nuclear field, but also to ensure that said research is preserved, persistent, and available across multiple search platforms. ANS is glad to partner with the following organizations to allow this accessibility:
